Open PSL Post - Damn Fine Coffee

[It's a relatively quiet time of morning at the Double-R Diner. most of the morning rush has already come and gone: a sea of hard hats, plaid flannels, chamois shirts, and puffer vests, leaving fresh work boot scuffs on the linoleum and around the bases of the counter stools. now only a few die-hard regulars remain, mostly at the counter. only one man's sitting in a booth, his trenchcoat draped over the back of the seat beside him, his black suit impeccably free of lint. the waitresses in their blue-and-white retro dresses are chatting toward the back of the diner as he nurses a cup of coffee with quiet, zen-like reverence. there's a laminated, glossy menu propped between the salt and pepper shakers and the condiment caddy at each seat, and also a blackboard with the specials hanging over the short order window at the back.

the whole overall picture is idyllic, iconic, like Edward Hopper and Norman Rockwell designed a place together with just the right blend of Americana whimsy and a dash of gritty noir for texture. it's bright, it's cheerful, but there's something off about the shadows.
